| EXCEL Aquatics announces that the Southern
Zone Eastern Sectional Championship will be held March 4 – 7 in Nashville,
Tennessee. This event is part of USA Swimming’s Speedo Champions
Series, a group of nine Sectional Championship meets that will be held
across the nation in the month of March. Athletes from Alabama, Florida,
Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee
and West Virginia will compete in this championship meet in Nashville.
A total of nearly 700 swimmers from 110 swim teams throughout this eastern
region are expected.
The meet will take place at Centennial Sportsplex, located at 222 25th Avenue North in Nashville. Competition will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 4 and will continue through Sunday evening, March 7. Thursday, March 4

There is ample bleacher seating for 1,500 competitors and spectators. All swimmers must have met the Spring Sectional qualifying time standard for each event entered. Eight swimmers each will qualify for a Championship, Consolation and Bonus heat in each event in the finals. The meet will be hosted by EXCEL Aquatics of Middle Tennessee. “We are thrilled to host a national swim meet of this caliber here in Nashville,” states Ed DeBruyn, General Chairman of Southeastern Swimming. “Some of the nation’s finest swimmers will be here to compete for top honors, including several Summer 2004 Olympic hopefuls.” Lea Kroll of EXCEL Aquatics will serve as Meet Director. She comments, “We are eager to host this Sectionals meet because it will draw swimmers that we don't normally get to see. There are some very talented athletes who will be attending this meet, and it will be good for Nashvillians to have the opportunity to see them compete. We hope these visiting coaches and athletes enjoy their stay in Nashville and get a chance to experience some of what this city has to offer." Some of the top-ranked swimmers who are entered in this meet include Maggie Bowen, the Auburn University swimmer from Jackson,Mississippi, who holds 4 national titles and is the American record-holder in the 200 yard Individual Medley. Also registered is Julia Stowers, of Pilot Aquatic Club in Knoxville, who won a gold medal in the 4 X 200 Freestyle Relay in the 2000 Olympics. Nationally ranked swimmers of local interest include Michael Gilliam, Macey Garrett and Sarah Sargent. Photo opportunities will be available before and during each session of the meet.
